Salmonellosis most commonly occur in newborn calves however it can also affect older cattle. It is caused by salmonella dublin. It is mostly common in calvess aged 3 to 6 weeks old.
Clinical signs of salmonellosis
- Lack of appetite
- Diarrhoea yellow brown colour with a foul smell
- Fever
- Dullness
- Marked weight loss
Post Mortem Findings
Severe congestion of the intestinal mucous membrane and presence of petechiae on the mucous membrane.
Treatment and control
A combination of two sulphur drugs namely Trimethoprim and sulfadiazine is very effective treatment. The disease can be controlled by vaccinating calves using live salmonella vaccines.
