WATER TOXICITY IN CATTLE

Definition

It is a condition that is common in cattle, it occurs when excessive quantities of water are ingested by very thirsty animals it is very common in calves 2-10 months of age.

Signs observed

  • Salivation
  • colic
  • diarrhea
  • edema of eyelids, erection of body hair
  • haemoglobinuria

NB: Always consult with your veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment in case you observe the above signs.

Prevention

  • Provision of salts and water ad libitum to calves from as early as 2 weeks of age
  • Salts may be provided as blocks or powder licks for calves to lick.
  • Introduce water in smaller quantities to very thirsty animals
